Why You Shouldn't Focus On Lead Generation

Companies love getting leads. Who doesn’t? Each new lead is a potential new customer, a new client. Potential sales, loyalty, and an increased brand presence. Overall, leads are a good thing to have.

But there’s a bit of a problem. You see, some businesses love them so much that getting them becomes their main marketing goal. They invest so much on the process of generating leads.  They will often hire a virtual assistant with a lot of marketing skills in their repertoire to help them out.

Sure, it’s a good thing to do, but many digital marketing experts will tell you that focusing on lead generation alone is a detriment to a business’s success. Here’s why.

Lead Generation Is a Means, Not an End

Generating leads can get quite difficult even if you know what you are doing. And if you don’t, you can always hire lead generation services to do it for you. They’ll use email marketing campaigns, social media, and other channels available online.
But the point is, if you’re not active in getting more leads, it’s going to be difficult to grow your business.

However, lead generation does not, in itself, create sales. It is only one step into turning strangers into customers that will buy from you.
Instead of doing your darnedest on gaining leads, you and your brand should focus on generating customers.

Generating Customers, Not Just Leads

What businesses need to focus on is not only lead generation, but the entire process of gaining customers.  You see, a key part of getting good leads is understanding your customers. When you figure out what they like and what they need, everything else starts falling into place. It makes your work easier for you.

When creating your digital marketing strategy, what you should think about is, “how do I gain loyal customers,” not only, “how can I generate more leads.” A lead may be interested in what you have to buy, but they won’t always become customers.

You need to continue working on nurturing them until they make a purchase from you. And even afterwards that, you have to maintain the relationship that you’ve established, be it through newsletters or discount promos, or whatever other means of constant communication available.

But keep in mind lead generation isn’t the only way to get customers. Don’t forget to do other forms of digital marketing. Invest in paid advertising.  Work on your website’s SEO (which you should have). Be active on social media. Everything is connected when you’re promoting yourself online. Doing these gives you more fruitful results in all of them.
